What do we mean by inclusion? Who is to be included? What are the links between inclusion and empowerment? How can inclusion be transformative? How is inclusion to be adopted in practice?

Inclusion for transformation looks at the integration of inclusive practices, as vehicles for equitable and sustainable social change. In this work, F3E brought together stakeholders from the research field, consultants and practitioners working for the promotion of social justice, both in France and world-wide. A one-year process for the exchange of collective intelligence has resulted in the drafting of a dozen articles, together with a postscript. These texts describe methodologies, inspirational experiences and a number of key factors for the support of practical implementation.

Far from seeking to take an exhaustive look at the issue of inclusion, the book highlights singular experiences and brings them into dialogue. The aim here is not to provide ready-to-use tools or to set an example, but rather to raise awareness and provide food for thought on how civil society organizations can take up the challenge of inclusion and make it transformative.

“Inclusion for transformation” can be discovered in three different ways, depending on the reader’s interests.

• Methodologies : a selection of articles presenting reflections and feedback on the implementation of inclusion-related tools, from planning to evaluation, not forgetting empowerment.
• Inspiring experiences : the articles in this section are based on the experiences of practitioners who offer an insight into their transformative inclusion and empowerment practices.
• Thematic journey : the aim is to follow a journey on inclusion that alternates articles dedicated to methodologies and inspiring experiences, in three parts:

1. Part one: Who to include?
2. Part two: Towards a community approach.
3. Part three: The power of action through a gender lens.

We hope these contributions will inspire you and inspire you to join us in thinking about transformative inclusion.
